Want Awesome Success? Choose Your Destiny, It’s Yours.

All your life, at least if you’re like me, in the process of seeking your destiny you’ve sought advice and listened to other people.

That’s not a bad thing at all, but do not take it to the illogical extreme some of us go to. There’s a big difference between seeking advice and letting others set your path in life.

Who controls your future?

There’s one thing you need to burn into your soul as you make decisions about your future. Your future is YOURS. As you walk down the path writing your life story, you’re the one doing the walking. You are the one who needs to decide if you like the story you’re writing. Nobody else is going to make that walk for you.

Edith Yeung, Founding Partner at RightVentures, said “My mom still asks me ‘Hey, when are you going to get a real job?’ I’m like ‘I’m working!’ Even after you achieve incredible feats, some people just won’t see it. This is why you can’t let others decide for you. You decide how you live your life, and as much as your loved ones love you, realize they don’t know it all – they don’t know exactly what path is right for YOU.”

I can’t stress this enough. You’re the one who is walking down the path. No one else. While you’re making that walk you should absolutely be seeking advice when the path seems to be turning. Even before the path turns is good a good time for advice. We all need advice. We need coaching. We should have a mentor.

But in all those things we should seek out those who will help us understand what we need to do, not tell us what to do.

You are accountable…

You are the only one who is accountable for the story you write of your life.

You may be at a place in your life where you’re the only one who can see the path through the forest. If that’s the case you’re likely to be surrounded by family and friends who are pointing out a “better” path that they can see for you. If that’s the case, don’t argue. That’s going nowhere.

Listen attentively, they may have something you’ll want to consider, when they’re done, smile and say your version of, “Thank you for that, I hadn’t considered it. I’m going to give it some serious thought.” And then change the subject.

If some of those people are folks you treasure, you’re going to have to learn to agree to disagree. If they’re acquaintances, find some new acquaintances. Do not include people in your inner circle who are holding you back for the sake of holding you back. You may well find that includes many, if not most, of the people you know.

It’s a hard truth in life, but you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.  Make them the very best people you can find.

You’re the one walking the walk.

You are the one on the tightrope.  Nobody else is going to take that first step and don’t expect anyone else to reach for you if you slip.

Be committed.  Be prepared.  Be focused.  Be willing to listen to advice but remember, the decision is yours.

Don’t let anyone talk you out of YOUR destiny.
