That’s not a bad thing at all, but do not take it to the illogical extreme some of us go to. There’s a big difference between seeking advice and letting others set your path in life.
Who controls your future?
There’s one thing you need to burn into your soul as you make decisions about your future. Your future is YOURS. As you walk down the path writing your life story, you’re the one doing the walking. You are the one who needs to decide if you like the story you’re writing. Nobody else is going to make that walk for you.
Edith Yeung, Founding Partner at RightVentures, said “My mom still asks me ‘Hey, when are you going to get a real job?’ I’m like ‘I’m working!’ Even after you achieve incredible feats, some people just won’t see it. This is why you can’t let others decide for you. You decide how you live your life, and as much as your loved ones love you, realize they don’t know it all – they don’t know exactly what path is right for YOU.”
I can’t stress this enough. You’re the one who is walking down the path. No one else. While you’re making that walk you should absolutely be seeking advice when the path seems to be turning. Even before the path turns is good a good time for advice. We all need advice. We need coaching. We should have a mentor.
But in all those things we should seek out those who will help us understand what we need to do, not tell us what to do.
