Today’s Challenge: Be Grateful Show Respect – It’s FREE

“Do Unto Others…“ It’s a cliché and you’ve probably heard that a bazillion times. That doesn’t make it any less true.

Doing unto others is simply a matter of showing respect to those around you. It’s an important way to practice gratefulness. So far this week we’ve talked about keeping a record of things you are grateful for and taking a personal initiative to say thank you to those we are grateful to.

Respect. If this was a video post you’d be listening to Aretha Franklin right now. But it’s not, so just take a deep breath and think about Aretha for a second. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Treat others with the same level of courtesy you expect to receive, in other words, “Do Unto Others…” Try smiling, show some kindness, and really listen to other people.

Smiling is a really wonderful thing to do, not only does it put everyone around you at ease but smiling tells your brain that everything in your life is perfect, even if it’s not. When your brain realizes that you’re smiling – what you mean or not – it releases endorphins and you feel better. You’re happy and you feel like you could conquer the world. And guess what? All of that is free.

Another great way to show someone that you respect them is to actually listen to them. Pay attention to what they’re saying. Think about it, how do you feel if you have something to say to someone and they make it obvious they’re not paying attention? It’s not a good feeling is it? But listening is actually quite easy, oh, and it’s free too.

Just put away your phone, use some positive body language starting with looking them in the eye, and respond to them with an enthusiastic tone by asking a question about what they’ve just said. They’ll know you’re paying attention. Isn’t that easy? And isn’t it a lot better for building relationships and paying attention to your phone or staring off into the horizon?

One really simple way of showing respect in your workplace is to be the person who makes a pot of coffee when it’s all gone. And while you’re at it, take a sponge or a paper towel and wipe down the counters. It only takes a second and it’s something that everyone will appreciate.

Be the person who respects everyone. You don’t have to agree with them, but by respecting them there’s a better chance that they’ll actually agree with you. Again, none of this is difficult and none of it requires a credit card.

Start off 2017 by being the person who really makes a difference in the lives of those around you. Be grateful – and be respectful – of everyone who crosses your path. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes not just in your life but in theirs too.

You’ll have a great 2017, you’re laying the groundwork for that right now, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to enjoy 2017 with you.

See you tomorrow!
