How to Be Happy and Stay Happy

If I could only be happy…  It seems like the great quest these days is to be happy.

If you think about what would make you happy, it’s a long list. Most of the things on the list likely involve your MasterCard. If you’ve got a list that looks like that, that is your first mistake.

Today we’re going to talk about where you find happiness and how to hang on to it.

The reason people don’t find happiness is because they’re looking in the wrong place. It’s not on the list that involves your MasterCard. Happiness is in the one place you would never think to look. It’s already inside you. The trick is to recognize it and celebrate it.

We are going to take a hard look inside ourselves and find the little happy person who’s hiding out. It’s a simple exercise and all you need is a few minutes of quiet time, a pencil and a notepad.

The first step toward being happy is to write some things down. It’s important to have a notepad when you do this because when little Mr. Happy goes into hiding again you’ll have a road map to find him.

First question, What are three things I like about me?

You have good qualities, you do. Since you’re like most of us you just don’t pay much attention to them. Or, when you do think of them, you’re either embarrassed at the thought of promoting yourself or you try to be modest and you beat that good thought to death.

Stop doing that. Recognizing that you have worth is an important step to being and staying happy. If you’re not happy with who you are, you’ll never be happy.

Feel free to list more than three but write down at least three.

Second question, How would other people describe me?

Don’t write a book here, just use one or two words. The point of the second question is to increase your self-awareness. If you need help on this, ask somebody.

Answers that you could perceive as negatives are just as important or maybe more important than those you perceive as positive. The positive answers are important because they’ll help you understand your strengths. Those negatives are important because they’ll help you understand your reality versus your perception of who you are.

Once you understand those positives and negatives, you can work to build up your positives and build your confidence.

As your confidence increases, areas of negative perception start to improve because your confidence will help you work on them in a positive way.

Once you get your writing assignments are done you’ll have the beginning of your happiness road map. You will be able to pull out your notebook and remind yourself that you’ve got a lot to offer the next time you start to feel down. That’s the first step on the road to staying happy.
